Had a great visit with Alan today. His room at Timaru hospital is on the ground floor with great views and natural light. He can talk the leaves off a tree I can tell you, all good stuff and really inspiring to connect with him again at last. He moves soon to Elloughton Gardens but will possibly have his arm x-rayed first to confirm how it is mending.

 

The Big Fonterra Tree Job is upon us. Working Bee scheduled for this week Tuesday at the site. Rings are ready and lay down area has been built. Really keen to knock this off so that the wood is available for those in our town who need it and for some to be auctioned off at our Foundation Night.

5pm-7.30pm. SH1 Molloy’s Road Intersection. We have two mechanical splitters and can fit one more so if you have one please bring it if you can. If you intend to help by lifting and placing rings most are fairly heavy therefore sturdy shoes/boots are best and if you have them please wear steelers. Important to think hydration and bring fluids, gloves to stop the pesky splinters and a hat as it can get quite cold along the hedge line. Waimate Rotarians in Action: Great to see the strength of our fine Rotary club in action helping to move Brian and Jenny Kitchens house lot from the salubrious surroundings of Studholme and into their very nice modern home in Waimate. A faithful reminder to me why I belong to such a fine club. Thanks Russell for engaging the team on this and being the lead.  

 

Last week’s Talk: Well we got a genuine Polio experience last week for sure. Ray and Lionel presented a total package on the scourge that polio is and has been and why we must not relent until it is eradicated. It can never be acceptable to cease the work and lose the focus just because it is not in our back yard at this point in time. As others are suffering, and we know the effects of that, we know we have the ability to continue to change the state of it elsewhere – so we must.

The really poignant message I got is that while you may seem cured it is with you for life and will come back as you age. As you work the muscles they deteriorate instead of becoming healthier and stronger, this of course seems counter intuitive but must be very difficult for those afflicted.
