PRESIDENT MICHAELS MOMENT

What an enjoyable and interesting talk from Sharvani last week at Rotary. I'm sure we all learnt a lot of new things, including how well qualified she is and how much she enjoys study. Learning about the festivals and the wedding process in India was very interesting too and sounds a lot of fun. Coming from a city with more people than the entire population of New Zealand to Waimate hasn't been too much of a shock as Sharvani has a great philosophy to just get involved and make the most of wherever you live. Well done.
See you all this week for a bit of fellowship, as we have no speaker booked, but do have some things up our sleeve.

COLLECTING $$ AND GROCERIES FOR THE RAFFLE FROM THIS WEEK PLEASE
World Polio Day is October 24th and our Club will be holding a grocery raffle and a $100 note in the Rotary kiosk on Friday 22nd October. So we would like items for the grocery raffle or donations or money to purchase items,  These can be bought to Rotary or dropped off at Sharyns. We will also be looking for volunteers to man the raffle hut

VOCATIONAL NEWS FROM DIRECTOR HARVEY

Vocational Committee Event
What: Club visit to Rotary Club of Tairei
When: Tuesday, Wednesday 12, 13 October 2021
Our club has enjoyed hosting several visits from the Rotary Club of Tairei and I would like to invite members on a reciprocating visit to Mosgiel.
The Tairei club is extremely keen to for us to visit.  They have prepared an interesting programme of events, with an option of 1 or 2 nights’ accommodation provided by Mosgiel Rotarians.
My opinion is that 2 days and 1 night would be enough.
The dates that Tairei club have given us are 12 and 13 October (a Tuesday and Wednesday).  This is only 10 days away.  If you are interested in joining this trip, please tell me soon.

ROTARY PROJECTS, EVENTS, AND MEMBERS

ONE MILLION MASKS PROJECT

Background
This is a concept to further support the people of Fiji who are suffering more than any other country (that is recording information) on a per head of population basis. With COVID on our doorstep in NZ we also have the opportunity to canvas our local schools, especially High Schools, as children over 12 are required to wear masks.
In a zoom call between Venky, myself and 3 of the Presidents of Rotary clubs in Fiji we discussed the  value of the masks that had been donated by Lanaco Ltd and shipped to Fiji for the Rotary Clubs to distribute to people in need.  These are people who could not afford to purchase a mask and, in many cases, do not understand the value of vaccination.  Some people are locked down in their villages and are not able to get into the larger towns and do not have good communication systems to learn about Covid.  People are dying in their homes.
Through an opportunity made available to me (Adrienne Murray  -  Porirua Rotary Club) through work connections we were able to take advantage of a lost order and send masks to Fiji at no cost through contacts of  Venky (Venkatesh Kannan  -  Awapuni Rotary Club).
The Opportunity
Lanaco Ltd  (www.lanaco.co.nz) has offered to continue their support of Fiji and New Zealand through Rotary and to supply masks in boxes of 10 at $23.50 a box.  The masks will be wrapped in paper and be in a cardboard box.  That is 50,000 boxes which will be virtually biodegradable.
The masks will all be stamped with the Rotary logo (using the correct branding of course) and the box will be branded Lanaco.
The masks are N95 level and NZ ISO certified.  If you are looking on the website they are the ones known as “Brezy”
The concept is that across New Zealand clubs will be asked to approach local schools and local business, or families or friends to fund the cost of a box, and will be given the opportunity, if they wish to have the name of their school or logo put on the box.  The boxes will be shipped from Auckland to Suva and received by the Suva Rotary Clubs.
We are not looking to make any money for Rotary
Why the Whole of the Country?
For this to work we need as many clubs as possible involved.  It is also a good opportunity to get all the clubs in New Zealand working together on a project that is not specifically within the RI tent (ie Polio)

OUT AND ABOUT

Rotarians get to help out our community in all sorts of ways, large and small, and last weekend it was off to offer some neighbourly assistance with removing jasmine from fence lines/property boundaries. John, Bridget , Harvey, and President Michael whacked in to it and got it all spick and span in no time. The 2 lovely ladies were thrilled with the help and were a little surprised to find the local pharmacist, paramedic, former Mayor, and President of the club spending their weekends in this way. Great job team

OUR PEOPLE

It was with sadness that President Michael read out a resignation letter from Pauline and Colin Dore last week at Rotary. We would like to thank them for the huge amount of time, effort, and commitment they have put in to Rotary and wish them well with their new adventures whatever they may be. Don't be strangers - the Dores are always up for a cuppa, and we will still catch up out and about in the community.
