This year the long running and very successful Rotary speech competition was revamped.  The competition was opened up to all students aged between years 5 to 12.  Each school held their own competition to choose finalists, who then attended the finals night.  The finals night of speeches was held at Waimate High School hall, in front of a large audience of parents, Rotarians, and supporters.  All the schools in our district took part, and a total of 52 finalists were chosen.

The winning students from years 5, 6, 7, and 8 presented their speeches to the club at our meeting on 25 July.

Rojan Marcos gave an excellent and very entertaining speech on Phillipino traditions, taking out the best overall speech award.

Molly Mansfield told us why we shouldn't be so glued to our phones.

We were also treated to great speeches on thar, tourism, New Zealand, and a very emotive speech on the Christchurch terror attacks.

Harry Davis was awarded the Lamp of Knowledge, for an excellent speech on farming.

All in all, the new format was a great success and we all look forward to next years competition!
